Sacramento County operates two main jail facilities. The Sacramento County Main Jail is at 651 I Street in downtown Sacramento. This is the primary intake facility. Most people arrested in the city of Sacramento come through here first. The Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center sits at 12500 Bruceville Road in Elk Grove, south of Sacramento. RCCC handles lower-security inmates and people serving county sentences. Together, these two facilities hold around 3,000 to 3,500 inmates on any given day. Sacramento City Jail Status

Sacramento does not operate a city jail. The Sacramento Police Department makes arrests and handles initial processing at its stations. After booking, inmates transfer to county custody. This happens fast. Most people move from a police station to the Main Jail within a few hours of arrest. If you are looking for someone just arrested in Sacramento, the county search may not show them yet. Call Sacramento PD at (916) 808-5471 to ask about a recent arrest. They can tell you if someone was picked up and when the transfer to county will happen.

The state capital location means Sacramento sees a mix of local and transient arrests. The downtown core around the Capitol building has higher arrest activity. The county jail system handles all of it through the sheriff's department regardless of where in Sacramento the arrest occurs.

Statewide Search Tools

California has statewide tools that cover Sacramento inmates too. CIRIS is the state prison inmate search. CDCR runs it. If someone from Sacramento went to state prison, they show up in CIRIS with their prison location and parole details. CIRIS is free. Search by name or CDCR number. It does not include county jail inmates from Sacramento or anywhere else. Only state prison.

VINELink works for all California county jails, Sacramento included. Search by name to see if someone is in custody. You can also sign up for alerts that notify you when an inmate's status changes. Call 1-877-411-5588 for VINE by phone. This tool helps when you are not sure which county holds the person. It searches all 58 California counties at once. Sacramento County also sends jail population data to the BSCC Jail Profile Survey each month for statewide tracking.

Note: Use the county sheriff search for Sacramento jail inmates. Use CIRIS for state prison inmates. Use VINE if you are not sure where the person is.
